DARUK: SAVAGE by Shukafae

DARUK: SAVAGES

Jessik Daruk Niliesian Marine awakens aboard the ruined NDF Destroyer Tomahawk and finds herself in orbit over a strange planet…

Pt1: ****

Pt2: DARUK: SAVAGE Pt2

Setting herself in the direction of the beacon, Jessik left the ship and the verdant valley for the dark gloom of the forest. Virgin, untouched, the tree trunks were like colossal black pillars stretching up into the sky creating a dense canopy where only the most determined rays of iron grey light made it through. Her steps were soundless, cushioned by a carpet of golden needles and thick spongy loam.
"Almost like home," she whispered, picking her path through ferns as green as her eyes.
It wasn't though, this was not Niliesia and training dictated a soldier's first enemy on a new planet was the planet itself. There were always germs and bacteria, dangerous flora and fauna big and small, a hundred thousand threats exacerbated b

Pt3: DARUK: SAVAGE Pt3

Jessik woke with a cry and wave of vertigo. She was dangling upside down from her feet in a room of corpses, more grey men in varying degrees of decomposition.
"Shit!" she cried as she became more awake and more aware of how badly she hurt, particularly her feet where the circulation had been cut off by her bindings. Looking around desperately she could only see more hanging corpses in a dim high ceilinged stone room. Struggling against the cords that bound her wrists she managed to pull them free but could not summon the strength to reach her feet. Half sobbing, she thrashed with a ragged scream managing only to jostle the corpses on either side of her. Her panic turned to rage in a flash and she reached out and grasped the closest corpse, digging her fingers into its cold waxy flesh.

Pt:4 DARUK: SAVAGE Pt4

"Niliesian..." it was the same voice that had awakened her back on the Tomahawk only now it was said in a drawl, a predator's satisfied purr."So strong! So hard! Oh, but barely holding on, how humbling that must be."
Jessik moved fitfully, or tried to at least, the weight of death pressed down on her, kept her immobile, she gasped and winced, it felt like cold fingers were rifling through her thoughts.
"Yesss, that is your name, Jessik Daruk," she jerked in pain, those cold fingers had sharp nails and they were pressing right into her brain. "You and I will be such great friends, I just know it."
               "Wh

Pt:5 DARUK: SAVAGE Pt5           "Are you sure you want me to go ahead with this?" asked Horki. Aneth nodded and gave his hand a squeeze.
"Yes, I really do more than ever," she answered in a soft voice.
"You realize...by doing this is you are opening yourself up to pain, if Katya-"
"Horki," she said giving his hand another squeeze, "I know very well, I know the odds we face, and I know the risks."
"If these bastards were to hurt you, torture you, and all because I made you whole I-"
"I am not afraid, and the real torture is being without feeling, even pain."
"Fucking hell," growled Horki rubbing his face, "Alright...the deal is I'm only going to go halfway on this, if...when...we make it out of this mess then I'll do a proper job."
    "That's fair."
"And for the record I still think this is a

Pt:6 DARUK: SAVAGE Pt 6
The show began with a single line of tracer rounds climbing skywards visible before the delayed bap bap bap of the gunnery reached her ears. Jessik waited and watched, it might’ve been an accident an embarrassing slip up, somewhere an officer was berating some hapless trooper for his itchy trigger finger.
The first flak round popped with a brief bright flash leaving behind a smudge of black smoke a shade darker than the night sky around it before another joined it, and then another until the whole sky writhed with flashing explosions. Tracer rounds shot upwards in blizzards so bright they illuminated the clouds in the night sky. Just a moment later the first incoming explosion lit up the skyline of Kerezhan Central. Jessik could feel it vibrate up through her boots and set her teeth

That was pretty good and evocative. It was easy for me to conjure up the images that went with the words. The way the ship operates and all those technical elements that belong in a scifi setting were excellently done. Very believable, yet not overly complicated or distracting from the story. That's why I stay away from scifi. I can't make the science work in a believable way and that's pretty essential, i'd say. Jessik's reaction were very human and very realistic as well. It makes her a believable character. Really, very well done. It was a pleasure reading this.
